Ahmad Al Faqi al Mahdi’s trial begins today at the ICC in the Hague a trial deemed the first of its kind at the international court. First because it is the first time the court is prosecuting an individual for crimes of destroying cultural heritage and secondly it is the first time a defendant has entered a guilty plea.
